The practice manager will be responsible for managing the business activities of our veterinary hospitals. This includes having direct authority and decision-making responsibilities over many business aspects of the practice. The candidate must be internet and computer savvy. He or She must comfortable working with accounting software (QuickBooks) and using analytic spreadsheets (Excel).
Practice Manager Responsibilities
Plans for optimal staffing to assure maximum productivity and service. This translates to best medicine, maximum patient comfort, satisfied clients and a smooth work flow.
Directly recruits, interviews and hires support staff.
Supervises support staff and mediates all personnel problems. Acts as the direct authority for disciplinary procedures and discharge. This includes all legal responsibilities of employment. The practice manager is responsible for support staff employment benefits.
Assures that support staff are properly trained.
Responsible for maintaining a thorough set of employment policies and protocols as well as a current employee manual.
Maintains employee motivation and enthusiasm. Pursues and structures continuing education for support staff.
Is responsible for ensuring that each interaction between clients and veterinary hospital staff is successful. Achieves this using client education and scheduling structured to best fit client/patient needs as well specific programs such as ‘fear free’ and ‘cat friendly’.
Develops and oversees a hospital marketing program, including website maintenance and social media platforms.
Oversees the building and equipment maintenance and housekeeping standards.
Either directly prepares or supervises preparation of all business accounting reports and transactions. Audits the preparer to ensure that proper methods and techniques are being used.
Reviews and/or prepares all accounts payable and receivable, ensuring that both are handled in a correct and timely manner.
Periodically reviews the fee schedule for products and services, adjusting them as necessary.
Establishes practice budgets and projections for growth.
Reviews and/or purchases supplies and equipment. The prices of these items will be periodically reviewed to ensure optimal buying opportunities.
Our two veterinary hospitals are located in the beautiful Finger Lakes region of New York State within a 15 – 30 minute drive to Rochester. Buffalo and Niagara Falls are an easy 1.5 hours away, and Toronto 3 – 4 hrs.
In addition to ultrasound and digital x-ray, our practice has state of the art dental equipment and offers acupuncture and chiropractic care. We also have a well-equipped lab and an in-house clinical pathologist.

The ideal candidate is a Certified Veterinary Practice Manager, or someone who possess a strong interest in achieving certification in the near future. At least three years of veterinary practice management experience is preferred, as is a BA/BS in a business-related field. Licensure as a NYS LVT is an asset.
Personal qualities that are highly valued in a candidate are professional appearance and demeanor, excellent interpersonal skills, and a positive, friendly attitude. The ability to make decisions and communicate clearly and effectively with fellow team members is essential as well as a strong respect for, and willingness to work with, clients and their pets.
The successful candidate must be able to pass a professional background check and drug test.
