Small Animal Rotating Internship Opportunity
Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Center of New Mexico, LLC
Details
Seeking Small Animal Rotating Interns for Great New Program in New Mexico Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Centers of New Mexico (VESCNM) is an privately owned, AAHA-accredited, multi-specialty emergency facility that is fully equipped with CT scan, MRI, ultrasound, digital radiography, laparoscopy, and endoscopy providing 24/7 care to the residents of Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and surrounding areas of New Mexico. Our hospital has in house support in critical care, surgery, internal medicine, dermatology, and behavior medicine. Our internship will also provide interns with opportunities to rotate through shelter medicine, ophthalmology, and zoo medicine in the town of Albuquerque. Additional out rotations will be allowed but coordinated by the individual intern. While this is our first year offering an internship program, we feel it will be a very strong program for graduating veterinary students to extensive mentoring and on-going learning to hone their medical, technical, and interpersonal skills over a one-year period. Many of our specialists have extensive practice in previously helping train interns and residents at universities and teaching hospitals previously in their careers, and look forward to adding this to our daily routine at VESCNM. For more information about our hospital, doctors, and services, please visit www.vescnm.com. We are currently seeking veterinary intern candidates for our small animal rotating internship for June 2018-June 2019. During our internship program, we will have our interns have primary case responsibility in the ER. While in the ICU, the interns will work alongside our criticalist during the days and participate in important client communications. During internal medicine and surgery rotations, interns will work alongside the associated specialist and have some primary case responsibility depending on the caseload. Surgical skills will be gained from laceration repairs on emergency, spays and neuters during a shelter medicine rotation, with the possibility of performing emergency surgeries like GDVs, pyometras, and C-sections later in the year. During surgery rotations the intern will be on call with the surgeon for emergency surgery experience, which is the only required on call duties during the year. All primary rotations will be a 5-day work week. Interns will have weekly didactic rounds. Each intern will be paired with a mentor in a field of interest of theirs, and at the end of the year each intern will present a grand-rounds on a topic of their choice. Our two board-certified criticalists will provide extensive one-on-one training for the interns to help mold their basic receiving and emergency skills seven days a week. Our three surgeons provide six day a week care with large amounts of soft tissue procedures in addition to the daily orthopedic procedures. Our internal medicine service provides four day a week care, and will help expose the interns to ultrasound, endoscopy, bronchoscopy, cystoscopy, and bone marrow aspirates. These services will provide our rotating interns with the majority of their core rotations, with at least 12 extra weeks for elective time, of which 2 weeks could be used as vacation from director approval. Our goal is to provide our interns with a learning experience designed to prepare them for residency if they desire, to set them up with the skills necessary to be a skilled, confident emergency clinician, or a confident well trained general practitioner. Requirements: Graduate of a College of Veterinary Medicine Veterinary licensure in New Mexico Veterinary degree from an AVMA accredited school U.S. citizenship Compensation Details: Salary of $38,000.00 plus benefits (Memberships to VIN, Vetgirl are provided to each intern. VESCNM also provides state licensing reimbursement, professional liability insurance, DEA licensing, and state pharmacy licensing. Interns are eligible for health, dental, and vision insurance) The Albuquerque metro area has a population of approximately 900,000. It boasts mild winters, sunny skies, and comfortable summers. For those who love winter and winter activities – you are in luck – there are many ski resorts within a 3 hour drive of the city. There are also a number of local outdoor activities as well – hikes, golf courses, etc. During the internship, you will have 1-2 days off to enjoy the city every week. The airport is small but conveniently located and easy to navigate. The regional cuisine is unique and can satisfy the foodie in everyone. Santa Fe is a unique cultural icon, with art galleries, an amazing trading center, and numerous cultural attractions.
