The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, Texas A&M University invites applications for an 11 month, full-time, non-tenure clinical-track, assistant or associate professor in small animal surgical oncology and soft tissue surgery, with a start date determined by availability of the chosen candidate in communication with the department.
The successful candidate will devote up to 70% time to clinical instruction and patient care in the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH), with at least 50% of that time as a senior clinician on a soft tissue surgery service and the remainder as an embedded surgeon within the integrated oncology service. Clinical duties and continued development of the oncology and soft tissue surgery services will be shared with 3 medical oncologists, 2 radiation oncologists, 1 fellowship-trained surgical oncologist, 3 soft tissue surgeons and house officers. Clinical responsibilities will include primary management of cases, instruction of veterinary students, mentorship of interns and residents (surgical and oncologic), and participation in after-hours surgical emergency coverage. The remaining time will be devoted to classroom and laboratory teaching, the development of a creative research program, and academic service. Active supervision of house officers and in-depth participation in intern/resident training (including topic rounds, journal club, and back-up support) is expected. Numerous opportunities for collaborative research exist throughout the College and University. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to interact with more than 45 small animal faculty members, and 35 interns and residents in the VMTH.
The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital is a spacious facility with sophisticated diagnostic and patient care equipment, including but not limited to color-flow Doppler ultrasonography for diagnostics purposes and local regional blocks, 4D transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, digital fluoroscopy, scintigraphy, 40 slice CT, 3T MRI, video endoscopy, nuclear imaging, acid-base/blood-gas analyzers, oxygen and inhalant gas analyzers, standard coagulation as well as TEG and PFA analyzers, intraoperative cell salvage transfusion equipment, phacoemulsification system, pediatric and adult patient ventilators, one-lung ventilation devices, high-flow oxygen therapy, and peripheral nerve stimulators. A state-of-the-art electronic anesthesia scheduling/case-tracking system along with 19 new Mindray anesthesia multiparameter monitors with a central anesthesia station allows the Texas A&M University anesthesia service to be one of the most sophisticated in the world. Radiation capabilities include TomoTherapy and iridium implant brachytherapy. Surgical suites and instrumentation allow for complex orthopedic, neurologic, cardiac, thoracic, oncologic, and abdominal procedures such as stereotactic brain biopsies, cardiac occlusive device implantation, and subcutaneous ureteral bypass device placement. Research equipment available, but not limited to, includes lithium and thermodilution cardiac output monitoring, thermal threshold testing, and mechanical threshold testing. PET-CT and fMRI are closely available for clinical and research use.

An applicant must hold a DVM or equivalent veterinary degree and must be a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS), or have completed an ACVS or ECVS approved residency and met the requirements to take the corresponding board exam.
