ASSISTANT DIRECTOR FOR STUDENT INITIATIVES

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the national not-for-profit association established in 1863 & representing over 96,500 veterinarians working in private and corporate practice, government, industry, academia, and uniformed services, is seeking a veterinarian to join our Membership & Field Services Division team as an Assistant Director for Student Initiatives. Structured to work for its members, AVMA acts as a collective voice for its membership and for the profession. Our mission is to lead the profession by advocating for our members and advancing the science and practice of veterinary medicine to improve animal and human health. This key position will be part of the Student Initiatives team that is responsible for overseeing, planning and administering AVMA support to the Student AVMA (SAVMA) and the individual SAVMA Chapters at the veterinary colleges. The Assistant Director will provide organizational support to their assigned student chapters including on-campus visits, chapter guidance, educational resources and additional services as needed. The Assistant Director also provides staff support to assigned governance entities while assisting with the development, implementation and ongoing support of current and new student programs/initiatives. Approximately 45% travel is required. The successful candidate must be a DVM/VMD; with a minimum of 3 years of related work experience including 1 year of clinical practice experience, not-for-profit association experience a plus. Must have a demonstrated interest/experience in organized veterinary medicine, along with a genuine interest in enhancing participation and diversity and inclusion in organized veterinary medicine. We’re looking for a dependable, flexible, adaptable self-starter who works effectively independently and as part of a team. Excellent public speaking, interpersonal, and written & verbal communication skills are required. Must have strong project management skills with the ability to handle multiple priorities in a deadline driven environment; and must be skilled at facilitating consensus between diverse groups. Strong computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Prezi) are required. The incumbent in this position must live in or be willing to relocate to within an hour of a major airline hub.
