Position Description A veterinarian for Nevada Humane Society (“NHS”) is responsible for working with a team of veterinarians to continually develop and maintain day-to-day operations of a comprehensive shelter medicine program and public spay/neuter program for a full service animal shelter, including but not limited to: (1) diagnosis and treatment of animals throughout the shelter (2) caring for sick and injured animals; (3) surgically sterilizing adopted animals and animal owned by the public; (4) working with adopters to ensure that their pets stay healthy and stay in their homes through post-adoption intervention; (5) performing emergency surgical procedures as required; (6) providing leadership, direction, guidance and training for veterinary support staff and other shelter staff.
Essential Job Functions: · Monitor the condition of animals in the shelter and address any conditions which would warrant care, including daily rounds in the shelter and clinic. · Perform physical exams on animals upon intake and as needed, and diagnose and prescribe treatment for sick and injured animals in the shelter. · Perform high-volume spay/neuter surgeries and additional surgery as necessary on shelter animals. Additional surgeries include but are not limited to dentistry, enucleations, exploratory laparotomies, orthopedics, tumor removal, amputations, etc. · Provide emergency medical care as needed, including but not limited to IV catheter placement, emergency surgery, etc. · Provide leadership, direction, guidance and training for veterinary technicians and other support staff. · Maintain comprehensive computerized medical records for medical management and surveillance of illness within the shelter. · Assist with coordination and supervision of NHS-sponsored veterinary clinics, e.g., low cost spay/neuter and vaccination of public animals and free roaming cats. · Adhere to a comprehensive health care program with the following components - environmental sanitation, record-keeping, disease surveillance, physical examinations, vaccination, parasite control, disease testing, disease treatment, surgery, nutrition, outbreak response, and environmental enrichment for animals in the shelter and in foster homes. · Educate staff and volunteers regarding animal disease. · Promote a caring attitude toward all animals and treat them humanely and compassionately at all times, regardless of circumstances, including those that are sick, injured, feral or aggressive. · Treat people (staff, volunteers, and the public) with respect and courtesy. · Foster a spirit of teamwork and perform duties in a manner that assists NHS in the achievement of its goals and encourages community support of its work. · Work cooperatively with managers and other key staff. · Participate in collaborative programs with the Truckee Meadows Veterinary Technician Program. · Be available for rotating on-call schedule with all veterinarians for emergencies as needed.

Minimum Qualifications: Education: · DVM degree from an accredited university required
Experience: · Experience with high-volume spay/neuter and dentistry preferred · Experience working in an animal shelter or TNR program preferred
Licenses: · Nevada veterinary license or ability to obtain a Nevada license within 30 days · Valid CA or NV Driver’s license and ability to pass Nevada Humane Society Motor Vehicle Report criteria. Current auto insurance.
Availability: · NHS is open seven days a week, as animals need daily care. Availability and a willingness to work a flexible schedule are a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: · Excellent veterinary and supervisory skills · Ability to help build and work within a cohesive and positive team, which is customer-service and animal-oriented · Self-starter who is well organized, innovative, flexible and professionally motivated to develop and implement the goals, objectives and policies of NHS · Exceptional interpersonal skills that can build bridges with the community and must be an effective communicator with the ability to speak to a variety of audiences · Maturity, good judgment and a professional personal appearance · Ability to remain pleasant and calm even in stressful situations · Ability to ask appropriate questions to gather information along with the ability to feel and show empathy for others
Physical Requirements: · Physical ability to walk and/or stand on your feet throughout a normal workday. · Physical ability to engage in repetitive motions of legs, arms, and hands, to hear, and to see. · Allergic conditions, which would be aggravated when handling or working around animals, may be a disqualification.
**We want to make employees aware that from time to time we euthanize animals who are sick or injured. Also, from time to time we need to end the life of a dog who has displayed aggressive tendencies and who poses a risk to public safety or to the safety of other animals. |
Additional Salary Information: Great benefit package offered: PTO and paid holidays, medical/dental/vision insurance, $1500 CE stipend, two paid professional dues, and paid licensing fees. As a 501(c)(3), you are also eligible for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.
