SUMMARY: Reporting to the Vice President Community College Affairs, the Veterinary Technology Program Director directs and coordinates the activities of the Veterinary Technology Program at Western Colorado Community College (WCCC). The program director is responsible for the daily operation, organization, administration, general effectiveness, and supervision of the Veterinary Technology Program, as well as program planning, teaching, development, coordinating and maintaining accreditation. This is a 12-month Administrative position with faculty responsibilities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
Direct faculty members to ensure instruction provided follows the approved curriculum and achieves program and course desired outcomes
Collaborate with administration in the design and implementation of the program
Develop and maintain a curriculum that meets standards of accreditation
Evaluate course content and texts within the program
Assist campus student services with admission recruitment of students for the program
Recommend class schedules and instructor teaching assignments
Maintain good working relations with all clinical affiliates
Perform all responsibilities and instructional duties in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations regarding the practice of veterinary medicine, as well as WCCC/CMU policies and procedures
Responsible for organizing continuous program review and development processes that assure program effectiveness
Perform functions of a veterinary technology instructor including teaching and evaluating students in the program
Order supplies and maintain equipment as needed
Coordinate the use of educational facilities, clinical resources, and experiential learning opportunities
Develop and maintain ongoing relationships within the community, fostering the program's responsiveness to community/employer needs
Participate in academic advising and guidance of the students
Prepare annual reports and self-study reports necessary for accreditation
Participate in veterinary professional development activities that facilitate professional expertise in the areas of administration, teaching and maintenance of clinical competence
Participate in local, state, and national veterinary professional associations
Develop and maintain an active advisory committee
Assist with open houses and orientation
Maintain and manage program budget
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This position supervises faculty in the Veterinary Technology department and may supervise work study students. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: REQUIRED: - Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited school
- Must hold a current license or eligible to be licensed, as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in the state of Colorado
- Must have 4,000 hours (approximately 2 years', full time) of related occupational experience within the past 7 years
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- Knowledge of Word, Excel, Power Point and other computer skills
PREFERRED: - Possess a Career and Technical Education Credential within six months of employment (approximately 40 hours' classroom time)
- Experience in teaching adults
- Strong interest in and commitment to the highest quality laboratory-based teaching, be responsive to changing industry expectations, and support strong industry/community relations.
LANGUAGE SKILLS Strong written and verbal communications skills. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from faculty, staff, administration, regulatory agencies, and/or community members. Ability to effectively present information.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to work with and apply basic mathematical concepts of arithmetic and algebra, along with the ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical problems.
REASONING ABILITY Ability to define problems, collect information, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to comprehend and interpret rules, regulations, policies, laws, and guidelines.
