PAWS Chicago is looking for a veterinarian passionate about animal welfare to join our progressive team, caring for the most vulnerable of animals. Each year PAWS Chicago, a no-kill animal shelter, adopts out over 5,000 animals. The Veterinarian position is a key role at PAWS Chicago, responsible for ensuring the highest quality of care for the animals in our program. Certified veterinary technicians, technicians and assistants are available for support as the Veterinarian treats a variety of infectious diseases, chronic medical diseases and urgent or emergency care. The laboratory is fully equipped including in-house bloodwork machines and PAWS has state-of-the-art digital radiography. Duties and Responsibilities
Perform examinations, vaccinations, a variety of diagnostic tests and complete medical records including a clearly outlined treatment plan to move animals through to foster, surgery and/or adoption
Diagnose and treat a wide variety of acute and chronic medical conditions, including infectious disease, in accordance with PAWS protocols and resources
Work closely with medical support staff (technicians and assistants) to ensure high quality care of PAWS animals and provide direction when needed
Maintain effective communication with medical staff, management, and other departments.
Perform euthanasia in accordance with PAWS practices
Maintain appropriate state licensing and professional liability insurance (paid for by PAWS)
Take immediate action to alert management to any safety concern or noncompliance of safety rules that could put an employee, volunteer, client, animal, or the organization at risk
Support a collaborative, professional, and positive work environment
Ability to multi-task while working in a high-volume, fast-paced environment while maintaining a high standard of care
Perform spays/neuters, as well as other soft tissue surgeries depending on skill level
Available for holiday coverage as needed
Other duties as assigned by management
Must be a licensed Veterinarian in the state of Illinois
Must be able to work standing or sitting for 8 or more hours
