The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the national not-for-profit association established in 1863 & representing over 105,000 veterinarians working in private & corporate practice, government, industry, academia, & uniformed services, is seeking a veterinarian to join our Education & Research Division team as an Assistant Director. Structured to work for its members, AVMA acts as a collective voice for its membership & for the profession. Our mission is to lead the profession by advocating for our members & advancing the science & practice of veterinary medicine to improve animal & human health.
Focused on accreditation, the Assistant Director will work with staff, volunteer leadership & stakeholders to propose, develop, & implement policies & programs for AVMA & the AVMA Council on Education (COE) concerning the accreditation of schools & colleges offering a professional degree in veterinary medicine. The Assistant Director will work closely & collaboratively with other professional & administrative staff within, or supporting, the Division to provide professional, timely, & results-oriented support to the accreditation activities of the COE. This includes providing staff support for accreditation site visits; developing & implementing COE site visitor training; & facilitating & supporting the activities of the COE & other governance entities as assigned. They are also responsible for executing association policies, objectives & programs concerning veterinary education & accreditation. Approximately 30-40% travel is required, position may work remotely.

To be successful in this role, you must be highly collaborative & passionate about AVMA’s mission & veterinary education. Additional qualifications include:
DVM/VMD or equivalent degree required, an advanced degree or board certification preferred
Minimum of ten years of related work experience, including experience as a clinician
Demonstrated knowledge of & experience in veterinary education is required & familiarity with the accreditation processes is desirable
Demonstrated leadership & management experience
Experience working with veterinary college administrators is highly preferred
Must possess excellent interpersonal & communication skills (written & verbal)
Skilled in diplomatic facilitation of consensus between multiple perspectives
Must be able to interact & effectively communicate both with members of the scientific & non-scientific community
Strong involvement with organized veterinary medicine highly desirable
