Moore Equine is a busy private practice that offers a broad range of experiences for externs. We provide general veterinary medicine services on both an ambulatory and in-hospital basis, as well as a referral center equipped for the full spectrum of surgical and medical care. We have advanced imaging capabilities, including a Hallmarq MRI, and Nuclear Scintigraphy. We have 15 full time veterinarians (as well as 5 part time), and we have board certified specialists in surgery, reproduction, sport medicine and rehab, internal medicine and equine practice (ABVP). We also have veterinarians certified in acupuncture, dentistry and chiropractic treatments. Our case load is 99% equine, with the rare bovine, small ruminant or camelid case. Each year we take six interns and we generally always choose our interns from the group of externs that have spent time at the practice.
Maximum Number of Externs at one time: 2
Externship Length: 2-4 weeks
Goals of the Externship: The externship aims to provide a broad exposure to equine practice. As Moore Equine is a large private practice, it provides a great learning opportunity. Externs are kept busy, and involved in all facets of daily activities and after hours care. We strive to provide opportunity for externs to practice some basic skills (ie NG intubation, catheter placement etc), and be involved in case discussion. It is also our aim that upon completion of the externship, externs will have a very good idea about what our internship program offers, and can pursue an internship application if desired.
Estimated Externship Workload: Externs assist with daytime and after hours appointments, surgeries, emergencies and in hospital treatments. They will also go on ambulatory calls and to the racetrack. The practice offers a busy and variable caseload, and thus offers lots of valuable learning experience, and exposure to a variety of cases. Externs are generally kept quite busy during the day, with alternating nights/weekends on for after hours experience (emergencies and treatments).
