The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the national not-for-profit association established in 1863 that represents over 105,000 veterinarians working in private and corporate practice, government, industry, academia and uniformed services, is seeking a Veterinary Medical News Reporter to join our Marketing and Communications team located at our Headquarters office in Schaumburg, Illinois, a northwest suburb of Chicago.
Reporting to the Senior News Editor, the Veterinary Medical News Reporter will be responsible for developing and writing articles – in coordination with other staff experts – on veterinary and animal-related news, of value to AVMA members and the public, for publication primarily online but also in print. The position will serve as the scientific writing content expert for the AVMA News team with the ability to interpret scientific and technical content and translate it appropriately for multiple audiences. They will work closely with the Creative Services and Digital Communications teams to ensure that compelling visual elements and social media accompany their articles.

Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, related field, or a scientific subject.
Writing background with five to seven years’ experience.
Strong reporting, interviewing, and writing skills; with experience in scientific and/or medical writing.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Highly organized and able to handle multiple tasks and deadlines with meticulous attention to detail.
Experience in the analytical evaluation of scientific data and written or oral presentation in a logical, clear, and concise manner.
Familiarity with web analytics and other methods of assessing the impact of communications.
Familiar with the leading academic journals in veterinary medicine and have the background knowledge to understand the significance of new research.
Knowledge of Associated Press style.
Must be able to function autonomously and as a team member.
Flexibility to work outside of normal business hours; and travel on behalf of the Association, as needed.
