Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky is offering a two-year Equine Veterinary Podiatry Fellowship for a licensed veterinarian who has completed a one-year equine internship and possesses foundational farrier skills. This immersive fellowship provides advanced training in equine podiatry, including lameness diagnosis, therapeutic shoeing, and surgical intervention. Fellows will become proficient in a broad range of diagnostic and treatment procedures while working in a collaborative environment alongside experienced veterinarians and farriers.
As a fellow, you will actively participate in the daily operations of the Rood & Riddle Podiatry service, which includes case work-up, treatment, trimming and shoeing, as well as follow-up care for both ambulatory and hospitalized patients. You will conduct diagnostic evaluations using advanced imaging techniques such as radiographs, MRIs, CT scans, venograms, and other diagnostic tools. Under both direct and indirect supervision, you will fabricate and modify therapeutic shoes and orthotic devices. In addition, you will contribute to consultations with clients, farriers, and referring veterinarians, developing and implementing individualized treatment plans for complex podiatric conditions. You will also be responsible for maintaining accurate and detailed medical records and participating in case reviews and rounds. Finally, you will engage in continuing education opportunities and educational outreach, including seminars, workshops, and publications, to stay at the forefront of advancements in the field.
The purpose of the Podiatry Fellowship is to enhance the Fellow's knowledge and skill in equine foot health. Fellows will gain hands-on experience in diagnosing, managing, and preventing complex foot conditions across a variety of equine patients. With mentorship and training from top experts, the ultimate goal is to become a highly competent equine veterinary podiatrist capable of handling complex podiatric cases.
This program is ideal for veterinarians who are passionate about equine foot health and want to develop advanced expertise in podiatry.
The ideal candidate will possess a DVM or equivalent degree from an accredited veterinary school, along with the successful completion of a one-year equine veterinary internship. A valid Kentucky veterinary license is required. The candidate should have foundational farrier skills and a strong desire to further develop blacksmithing and shoeing abilities. A keen interest in equine lameness and podiatry is essential, along with a demonstrated commitment to patient care and ongoing professional development. The candidate must also have the physical ability to handle horses and perform both farrier and veterinary duties in variable environmental conditions.
